Story

The narrative of "Dangal" revolves around Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former wrestler who dreams of winning a gold medal for India. Unable to achieve this dream himself, he hopes for a son who can fulfill it. However, when his wife gives birth to four daughters, Mahavir's dream seems unattainable until he realizes that his daughters, Geeta and Babita, have the potential to become wrestlers.

The film explores themes of gender roles, determination, and the struggle for self identity. It challenges the traditional patriarchal norms of Indian society by showcasing how Mahavir, despite societal pressure, decides to train his daughters in a male dominated sport. The story also delves into the relationship between Mahavir and his daughter, particularly the tension that arises as they struggle with his strict training regimen and the expectations placed upon them.

The narrative is both inspirational and emotional, highlighting the sacrifices and hard work required to achieve greatness. The movie also touches upon the societal resistance to female empowerment in rural India, making it a powerful commentary on the state of gender equality in the country.

Characters

Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan)

The protagonist of the film, Mahavir is a determined and strict father who sees potential in his daughters and is relentless in his pursuit to train them as wrestlers. Aamir Khan's portrayal of Mahavir is nuanced, showcasing the character's discipline, stubbornness, and underlying love for his daughters.

Geeta Phogat(Fatima Sana Shaikh/ Zaira Wasim as young Geeta)

The elder daughter of Mahavir and the first female wrestler to win gold at the commonwealth Games. Her character arc is central to the film, as it portrays her journey from a reluctant child wrestler to a confident international champion. Geeta's struggles with her father's expectations and her own desire for independence are key elements of the story. Fatima Sana Shaikh is fantastic as adult Geeta and carries some of the important scenes on her shoulders.

Babita Kumari(Sanya Malhotra/ Suhani Bhatnagar as young Babita)

Babita, the younger sister, also becomes a successful wrestler. While her journey is less focused on compared to Geeta's, she represents the continuation of Mahavir's legacy. Sanya Malhotra performance brings out Babita's resilience and quiet strength.

Music

The music works as an additional screenplay in the movie. The music for "Dangal" was composed by Pritam, with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The soundtrack plays a significant role in enhancing the emotional and motivational aspects of the film. "Dangal" was sung by Daler Mehndi, this song is an anthem of determination and grit. "Haanikaarak Bapu" song humorously captures the girls' initial resentment towards their father's strict training regiment. The playful tone of the song contrasts with the seriousness of their training, making it memorable. "Dhakaad" is a powerful, upbeat song that underscores the girls' growing strength and prowess in wrestling. It highlights the breaking of gender stereotypes, with the girls taking on and defeating male opponents.

The dialogues are heart felt and works perfectly as per the situation required. The cinematography by Setu is of top notch and does proper justice to the feel and genre of the movie. It's refreshing to see the Haryana state to be shown in such positive manner first time for the Hindi cinema.

"Dangal" is a film that combines the intensity of a sports drama with deep emotional and societal themes. The story of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters is not just about wrestling but about the fight against societal norms and the pursuit of one's dreams. The characters are well developed and bring depth to the narrative, while the music complements the film's tone, making it an all encompassing cinematic experience. Finally,  the film was both a critical and commercial success, praised for its storytelling, performances, and its ability to inspire. 'Dangal' shines high and deserves all the awards and medals for its brave, daring, engaging and highly entertaining display.
