 Significance of Media Literacy

What is Media ?  

The term media, which is the plural form of medium, refers to the communication channels through which we disseminate news, music, movies, education, promotional messages and other data. It includes physical and online newspapers and magazines, television, radio, billboards, telephone, the internet and fax. 


What is Literacy ?

Literacy is traditionally understood as the ability to read and write. The term's meaning has been expanded to include the ability to use language, numbers, images and other means to understand and use the dominant symbol systems of a culture.


What is media literacy ?

Media literacy is the ability or skills to critically analyze for accuracy, credibility or evidence of bias and the content created and consumed in various media, including radio and television and the internet and social media. There are some definitions from scholars.

In today's digital age, most of people in the world are spending such large amounts of time online and infront of screens. media is everywhere and technology is a part of life. The messages, images, information, and experiences which we engage with everyday through media help shape our beliefs, attitudes, values and identity. Used well, media can entertain, inform and engage us in positive ways. media use helps young people become more competent in a digital age. as well as they send messages and information that can have a negative impact on people's health and wellbeing and prevent them from becoming empowered and engaged citizens.

Media Literacy is an important skill for navigating the vast amount of information available at our fingertip. Like reading or math media literacy is learned. The ability to navigate within our complex and everchanging media landscape depends on acquiring skills and tools to know how to consume and evaluate information, ask critical questions, avoid manipulate and engage in digital spaces safely and confidently. Therefore everybody needs to be aware of their media literacy level . It is crucial for the consumer. 


 1. Identifying Misinformation

In nowadays, with technology anybody can create contents on what they think. But the question is, is these all information are true. Most of information are fake. they have no evidence to believe them. But some people interpret these news and spread in the society. So media literacy is important to identifying misinformation. Media literate person ask from own self from where this information comes? is it come from credible source? can it be happened in real life like that. 

For example-  

During the COVID-19 pandemic, false information about cures and treatments circulated widely on social media. 

Like that media literacy skills help people verify the credibility of sources, check facts, and avoid spreading misinformation. 


 2. Understanding Bias

In mass media most of news and programs can have biases. We can recognize it through how they present news, what are their facial expressions, how they call bias names and how they create person through media. Media have huge ability to create something or destroy something. so when we use media we should engage in active way. News outlets can have political biases.

For instance- 

If two different news channels report on the same political event with drastically different tones, a media-literate individual would compare the reports and critically analyze the underlying biases. 

A media literate person recognizes this and seeks out multiple perspectives to form a balanced opinion. 


3.Evaluating Advertisements

 The media is such a huge industry. Their main purpose is earn more profits. Advertisement is one of the main way to achieve their goal. So media always work to improve their businesses. Then media present everything what the different companies give without seeks their positive and negative impacts. Advertisements often use emotional appeals or misleading visuals to sell products. And also media create additional needs for people to sell products. 

For example- 

When promoting some beauty products they use women's body to influence customers. "I have been using this product for two years, I have many benefits from this product" like that.

 But it is not real it is a business. A media-literate consumer understands these techniques and can make more informed purchasing decisions. 


4. Recognizing Clickbait

Most of media creators want to get more profit. So however they try to influence people. Online headlines are often designed to attract clicks rather than provide substantive information. Sometimes the danger of the news which shown in the headline not in the content of the news. A media-literate person can recognize sensationalist headlines and choose to seek out more in-depth and credible sources of news.

 For instance-

A headline like "You Won't Believe What Happened Next!" but there is no thing to confuse in the content

So media literate person can recognize sensationalist headlines and choose to seek out more in depth and credible sources of news.


5. Understanding Media Ownership

Mostly media ownership can influence content. Because they create their own contents according their own viewpoints. A media-literate individual understands that media conglomerates might shape news coverage to align with their business interests. 

For example-

If a news channel owned by a large corporation downplays a story about corporate tax evasion.

If a channel owned by a political party, the transmit messages to build political personality. 

a media-literate person might seek out independent media sources for more balanced coverage.


So, in this way we can realize that people must have the ability to understand and interpret the messages in active way. Otherwise media try to control people. Media literacy is about empowering individuals to navigate the complex media landscape and participate in society in an informed and engaged way. By promoting media literacy, we can create a more informed, engaged, and inclusive society.
