The focus of 'kodi gaha yata' is on the hopes, struggles and social issues that rural Sri Lankans face. The teledrama shows how the people who live in sums near Colombo convey their life through various conflict, connections and inconveniences. Mahesh is the Jeewani's husband and they have a little girl as their kid. Another family which lived with them in the sums is Piyal's family. It includes Sriyani as Piyal's mother and Nilanthi as his sister. These are the main characters but throughout teledrama various characters come in to the drama in different situations. Their lives go through very difficult path.

* Mahesh

Mahesh portrayed by Jagath Manuwarna himself. He is the most complex character in this drama. Mahesh is sensitive and lovely person. He really love and take care of his daughter and wife. Mahesh call his wife as 'sudu' and daughter as 'doni'. He ready to do anything for them. The character shows his life is not gone without them. 

He works as an undertaker for a vehicle leasing company. One time he does a murder as need of other person. But after that day he shows that he really regret about it. He can't sleep at night as he remember that person's face. So we realize he has a sensitive and soft heart. He try to help everyone who is around him as he can. 

 

His father is always waiting to see his success. And his mother also try to create a better life for him even she lives apart from them. 

The last mission, Nevil tells to kill three person including mother, father and daughter. In earlier he promised Nevil to do anything for their target. But when heard to kill a child, he tells that If we want to kill that daughter I don't work together to achieve this target furthermore. So in that case we can realize he really love to children because of his childhood. After that he want to live as he like not as others wants. But the society, media, and Police made he as a criminal named 'Sees Mahesh' in front of the country. During Mahesh being a criminal the main criminals Loyar Rohan and Nevil are watching that incident calmly from television. These are the real incidents that is happening in today's world. The people create fair persons as criminals. 

* Asela

Asela's character portrayed by Xavier Kanishka. He is a innocent boy who came from a poor village to Colombo to find a better life. But he is trapped by the cruelties of the urban world. He works as a mechanic. He really love his sister. He always faces struggles to protect sister from Gamini. Because of his love for sister he punishes Gamini. His character represents helpful, respectful, lovely, friendly and honest person.

 Asela shows how a helpful , innocent mechanic becoming a underworld thug due to the society. His bad life beginning with his factory manager named him as a thief. But it is not a real, he is not a thief, he is a innocent boy. He was jailed following this incident. The day which he left from jail he visits his one best friend, but at that time he knows who is help to manager to made him as a thief. So in that situation Chathuranga is died because of the Asela's fault. From then after he unwittingly becomes entangled in actual criminal activities. He meets Mahesh in the jail and he begins work with Mahesh. So he become a member of Nevil's team. But in the final mission he also leaving the group like Mahesh. At the end of the teledrama he become 'Juki Asela' from Asela. Who made the Juki Asela ? They are media, police and the whole society.

* Jeewani

Jeewani is the wife of Mahesh, portrayed by Nadeesha Hemamali. She is a beautiful wife and a lovely mother for her family. She has come with Mahesh from her rich lifestyle and married him live happily together separating their families. She adjust her life in a new way with Mahesh. She really love her husband. After, Mahesh is jailed. Then he ask his friend Piyal to take care of his wife and daughter. At that time Jeewani starts a relationship with Piyal. Because the society has made a young woman can't live in the society with children without husband. It is a society's opinion. But it is just a relationship not a love. So it is brokeup with Mahesh is released from jail. 

The character shows how she face the struggles which come with Mahesh's work patiently. She is a real wife who love and care her husband. 

* Kalu

Nalin Lusena's portrayal of Kalu is particularly impressive, adding vibrancy to the drama. Kalu represented a pivotal figure in the LGBTQIA+ community as a non binary person addressing the challenges faced throughout their life journey. Misunderstood by their mother, unable to connect with siblings and facing rejection in childhood friendships, Kalu's character shed light  on the struggles encountered by many non binary individuals in Sri Lanka. 

He is a helpful and friendly person for people who around him. He helps Asela, Asela's sister and Nilanthi in different situations. Sometimes he is a funny person and also sometimes he is a sensitive person. 

* Piyal and his family

Piyal's family included sister and mother. They live in a small house in a sum area near Colombo. He is a tuk tuk driver while his sister works in a factory. Piyal is a innocent and a playful boy. Firstly he starts a relationship with Jeewani. Thereafter he begins a relationship with Nilanthi's friend Maneesha. But Maneesha is a cunning girl.  She cheats on Piyal. In that situation Piyal is suffering a lot with his feelings. Because he really loves her. 

When talk about the mother Sriyani. She is a lovely and strong mother who dedicated her life to her children's survival without seeking helps from another man. But sometimes she try to fulfill their needs from others. 

Nilanthi is a innocent and helpful girl and easy to cheat on her. So she is cheated by Waruna who is her boyfriend. 

Overall the family believes Myths and spend more money to seek solutions for their struggles. The family shows the struggles faced by Sri Lankan people like education, relationship choices, lack of guidance, financial difficulties, job insecurity and social recognition issues prevalent among lower and lower middle economic classes. This portrayal sensitively depicts family dynamics and the hardships encountered by this demographics.
