Acting Performances

When consider the acting performance, all characters have done their best for the significant improvement of movie's narrative depth and emotional resonance.

  • Vijay Sethupathi as Maharaja

Vijay Sethupathi portrays the titular character Maharaja with remarkable depth authenticity. His performances capture the essence of a father in a web of crime and retribution. Sethupathi's acting conveys Maharaja's internal conflicts and moral dilemmas making the character both compelling and relatable. He makes everything for his daughter. His character appears as an innocent and poor man, but he is very strong and straight person. He is ready to fight with anyone for his daughter. He treats the dustbin which is save the daughter's life as woman naming it Lakshmi. It is a great symbol to understand how much he loves the daughter. He is a brave person as he uses strategies to find out rapers of the daughter. At the climax we can see the daughter is not his own daughter, but it is not a problem for him. She becomes the Maharaja's daughter after the accident.

  • Anurag Kashyap as Selvam

Anurag Kashyap takes on role of Selvam, the film's antagonist delivering a performance that is both menacing and complex. He is a lovely husband and a father for the family. He does everything for his daughter. It symbolizes by purchasing an expensive necklace. On the other hand, he is dangerous thief for the society. He kills people, steal valuable things and the villain of the movie. On his daughter's birthday he misunderstands Maharaja who tries to help return back his lost necklace. Then he begins to hate Maharaja. After fifteen years he comes and rapes Maharaja's daughter to cover his anger. At the climax when he realizes he harassed his own daughter by misunderstanding, he suffers a lot by regretting what he has done to the daughter. Because his life is his daughter. At last, he dies by own self after he understands the truth. Because he can't satisfy with his treatments to the daughter, so he doesn't want to live furthermore. It is his love for his daughter.

Other characters including Jothi, Inspector Aravindan, Nallasivam are also play main characters in the movie.

Signs and Codes

A prominent symbol in Maharaja is the snake. The character Nallasivam portrayed by Singampuli embodies snake like qualities, he masquerades as a police officer while secretly engaging in criminal activities. Maharaja act of handling the snake reflects his quest for justice.

The recuring image of a broken mother child figurine symbolizes fractured familial relationships and the emotional turmoil stemming from betrayal and loss. The death of mother and daughter only reflect through this image. By seeing it, audience know what happened due to the accident. So this movie uses so many meaningful symbolic languages.

This is an interesting movie due to its mix of flashbacks and present scenes. While watching this movie some people may be difficult to find out whether it is from present or past story. There are few symbols to identify past and present. As well as the story of movie is very emotional and heart touching. Because it reflects the bond between daughter and the father. All fathers are very lovable for their children no matter how they are good or bad to the society. However, the movie makes me sad, and in the climax, I couldn't control my tears.
