 Maya Sinhala Movie. 


Maya is a 2016 SriLankan Sinhala 3D horror comedy movie directed by Donald Jayantha and co-produced by Raja Sadesh Kumar and Srimathi Sadesh Kumar. It stars Ranjan Ramanayake, Pubudu Chathuranga in lead roles along with Giriraj Kaushalya, Nilmini Kottegoda and Upeksha Swarnamali. This film is based on Indian Tamil film Kanchana directed by Raghava Lawrence. 

The movie is around a transgender woman. So, this is a great example for queer representation in the movie industry. The movie includes past and present stories. In the past, the young boy named Mayantha over time becomes a transgender woman by reflecting girl's behaviors, facial expressions and attitudes. Then the family reject her and kick her out of the family. It is the action of the society for those kinds of people. After he get adopted by a Tamil man named Ramu who has a son with a disability. Then Mayantha becomes Maya who is portrayed by Ranjan Ramanayaka. In her childhood she has a dream to be a doctor. But because of her condition she is unable to fulfill it. She adopts another transperson who faced the same situation named Madhuri. Then Maya does everything for Madhuri and spend lot of money earning by herself for Madhuri's studies. As a result of it, Madhuri is selected to higher education. 

At that time Maya conducts a speech representing all people in transgender community. The society used to insult them, laugh at them and treat them inhuman way. They have no equal rights as human. She says that the transgender happened because of hormonal imbalances and environmental conditions. So it cannot be controlled by anyone. Then she asks equal rights for queer community as they are also human beings like others. 

She buys a land for Madhuri's hospital, but that land is unlawfully taken by Minister Ashok. The scene where Maya goes to ask justice from the Minister, unfortunately Maya, Ramu and his son are killed by the minister cunningly. Maya is not woman who has bad attitudes she is innocent, honest and helpful for everyone even though she is rejected by the society as well as she is powerful. At the time she died, she makes a word to come back and owned their property. As her wish she comes and kill the minister, his wife and henchmen as a ghost and takes their property and build a hospital with Malan whom body used by Maya. As the movie they are very nice people but if they face some unfair situations, they don't allow that people to live furthermore.

Accordingly, this is great example that shows how transgender people face struggles in the society, how they are treated by the society belonging their own family and how people see that people and also how they are strong, brave, kind, innocent and talented. So, the movie Maya represents the queer community in positive ways and it performs to change societal perspectives about that people.
