Ratsasan is a 2018 Indian Tamil language crime triller movie. It was directed by Ram Kumar. The film stars Vishnu Vishal, Amala Paul and Sarvanan while Ammu Abhirami, Kaali Venkat, Vinodhini Vaidyanathan and Ramdoss play supporting roles. The film features music and a background score composed by Ghibran, cinematography by P.V. Shankar and editing by San Lokesh. It tells the story of and aspiring film director who becomes a police officer after his father's death and tries to track down. 

Themes 

Psychopathy and Childhood Trauma

Ratsasan portrays how unresolved  childhood trauma can manifest into violent psychopathy. Christopher's psychological descent wasn't born out of evil but accumulated trauma physical, emotional and social. The film highlights society's failure in handling children with emotional needs and those who don't comfort to norms. 

Obsession vs Duty

Arun's journey is a study of how obsession can be channeled for good or destruction. Initially seen as unhealthy( his fascination with psycho killers cost him personal and professional relationships), it later become his greatest strength. His commitment borders on obsession reflecting how some vocations demand personal sacrifices especially in law enforcement.

Good vs Evil

Ratsasan suggests  evil is not purely born but made. Through Christopher's background, it shows how circumstances, neglect and abuse can shape dangerous tendencies. Arun's character shows that goodness also requires effort, struggle and  sacrifice. It is a conscious choice not just an innate quality. 

Plot


The story follows Arun Kumar an aspiring filmmaker forced to become a sub inspector who investigates a series of brutal child murders in his town. After multiple abductions and  deaths of schoolgirls including his own niece Ammu, Arun connects the crime through patterns and clues involving a lady magician Annabella George. His unofficial investigation uncovers that Annabella is actually Christopher, a man suffering from Werner Syndrome(Progeria), seeking revenge due to his traumatic past. His mother Mary Fernandez once killed a girl who rejected Christopher, leading to their imprisonment and presumed deaths. In reality Christopher survived, disguised himself and continued the killings

Inthe final confrontation Arun rescues Kayal and  kill Christopher bringing the murder spree to an end. The case concludes with Arun achieving his dream of making a film about a psychopath based on the case he solved.

Arun Kumar


Arun Kumar character  portrayed by Vishnu Vishal. Arun is deeply empathetic, persistent and introspective. His obsession with psycho killers isn't mere fascination but driven by a desire to understand the human mind. From struggling filmmaker for violent and dark films, rejected by producers he transforms into a dedicated cop after his father's death which also symbolizes the death of his naive ambitions. He channels his obsession into saving lives reflecting how personal trauma can forge resilience. Arun constantly battles between personal emotions like fear and grief and professional duty. His connection with his niece Ammu deepens the stakes showing his vulnerability beyond the tough cop person.


Christopher Fernandez/ Annabella George

Christopher portrayed by Saravanan. Christopher suffers from gender dysphoria, psychopathy and severe childhood trauma. The bullying, rejection from peers and his abusive father led to social alienation and identity  crisis. He kills young girls resembling his lost childhood self, a subconscious attempts to preserve them before the world corrupts or hurts them as it did him. The movie reflects his dual identity struggle trapped between the biological identity imposed by society and the gender identity he longed for. 

Sings and Symbols

Music box - Memory trigger from Christopher's childhood and his lost innocence.

School uniform girls - Reflection of his own childhood self representing purity before corruption

It highlights the importance of understanding mental health, the consequences of societal neglect and the resilience required to pursue justice. Ratsasan is a case study on how monsters are created by circumstances and how empathy could be the ultimate weapon against the evil.
